Gooner in Me!!

Above picture is of the English Club ARSENAL Squad for the year 2007/08..
Since 5-6 years ive been a big fan of Arsenal. Arsenal players are also called as 'gunners' and the fans 'gooners', symbolizing the canon in the Arsenal Logo.. Last few seasons, they haven't been doing well, But this year they have started positively even without the famous Thierry Henry , who moved to barcelona.. They have won 3 matches and drawn 1 out of the 4 matches played..
This saturday is a crucial clash against London rival Tottenham hotspurs. Its called a Derby match. All derby matches r close encounters, with lotta expectations from fans n management. I hope they do well, and show spurs that they r a better team. My prediction is that Arsenal will win 2-1.. Lets see how the match goes.
Come on Arsenal !!!!

Basics of CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)

In our day to day life, We may face with emergency situations when a person near might collapse or stop breathing and you don't know what to do. So I am jotting down some basics of Resuscitation, which everyone must know.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, commonly called CPR, combines rescue breathing (one person breathing into another person) and chest compression in a lifesaving procedure performed when a person has stopped breathing or a person's heart has stopped beating.
When performed quickly enough, CPR can save lives in such emergencies as loss of consciousness, heart attacks or heart attacks, electric shock, drowning, excessive bleeding, drug overdose, and other conditions in which there is no breathing or no pulse. The purpose of CPR is to bring oxygen to the victim's lungs and to keep blood circulating so oxygen gets to every part of the body. When a person is deprived of oxygen, permanent brain damage can begin in as little as four minutes and death can follow only minutes later.

In our Medical practice, We have been thought to always remember the " ABCs of Resuscitation". It means first you look for the A- Airway, then B- Breathing and finally C- Circulation. Airway Implies to check whether any object, foreign body or food material is blocking the Oral cavity, Air passage or the structures nearby. Breathing is checked by putting your ears or hand in front of the patient's nose, if present u will feel the warm gush of air. And Finally Circulation implies whether the patient's heart is pumping blood to other parts of the body which is felt by checking the pulse, preferably the 'Carotid Pulse' in the Neck. Every time the Resuscitation done should be in this order, which is vital for survival.

CPR in basic life support
Always First step if you see any victim who has collapsed, immediately call for Medical Help.
In the meanwhile, you can resuscitate the victim as shown in the adjoining picture.

Figure A: The victim should be flat on his back and his mouth should be checked for debris, foreign body etc.
Figure B: If the victim is unconscious, open airway, lift neck, and tilt head back.
Figure C: If victim is not breathing, begin artificial breathing. It is done by closing the victim's nose with one hand, with the other hand open the victim's mouth, take a deep breath and blow into the victim's mouth directly as shown in the figure. Give four quick full breaths.
Figure D: Check for carotid pulse.
Figure E: If pulse is absent, begin artificial circulation by depressing the central bone of chest called Sternum.
Remember while giving the thrust on Sternum you should use your heel of the hand and keep your elbows straight. The thrust should be directly from the shoulders. Take precaution that you don't press too forcibly or else you will break the rib of the patient. The sternum should be pumped at a rate about 100/min with sternum sufficiently depressed up to 4-5 cm
Figure F: Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation of an infant.
The Resuscitation is conventionally given in the form of 2 successive breaths for every 15 chest compressions

I hope this might have given you some idea of resuscitation, If you have further doubts, I will be grateful to help.

Life As a Doctor !!!

As a Doctor , while on duty, everyday u see tons of patients, care for them , treat them in a best possible way. Every time u have to be very careful , not to be too emotionally attached to a patient. Because Once u get emotionally attached to a patient, and if anything happens to the patient , u kinda feel really bad. U start putting blame on yourself that u were not able to help him or her..
Once there was a young boy named Prashant who was brought to casualty, I was in my medicine posting then. The fellow had consumed insecticides, and was in a very critical stage, every one were running here and there , which by the way was a usually a normal scene during a busy night in casualty. I went to see the patient, he was really in a bad state, i checked his vitals, did some preliminary investigations, and send a SOS for my senior because it was a complicated suicidal poisoning case. He came immediately , and we started aspirating all the poison from his stomach, becoz if there is any poisons left unabsorbed from his stomach, we can reduce the poisoning.
As we were trying to revive him , he suddenly collapsed, i Looked at his pulse, cudnt get any.. So we immediately started CPR and shifted him to our Intensive Care Unit, where he was put on a ventilator , to support his breathing . So now as i was in charge of ICU, i was awake whole night monitoring him , as all my seniors went to their rooms. I thought what would have driven such a young boy to commit suicide. I feel very sad when people commit suicide, we have been gifted a life , we should make full use of it. Problems are there in every1's life , but suicide cannot justify anything..
As days passed by , he remained unconscious, there was very little voluntary activity. He just used to open his eyes a bit , see here and there . Once, again during my night duty, I was on my routine check up of all the patients in ICU. I was tired i wanted to finish all the work and have a seat. I went to prashant to check his BP, i tied the cuff around his arms, suddenly , he moved his hand, and caught hold of my hand, i was really taken aback, was shocked. I looked at him, with his eyes half open, was trying to say some something to me. But I could here nothing more than a whisper. I said " kuch samajh nai araha hai, Kaisa lag raha hai abhi?" (cant understand what you are saying, How are you feeling now?) . He dint say anything, Just smiled at me, and closed his eyes.
I was happy First time , he has responded well to medications. I told his mom that today, he opened his eyes and was trying to tell something, tears rolled out of her eyes. She said, " doctor sahab, aap jitna bhi kar rahe hain , uska aapko kaise shukriya karenge pata nai. aap to mere liye bhagwan hai" ( Doctor How much ever you are doing , i dont know how will i repay you, You are like a god to me) . That was really moving, i just calmly went and sat in my chair. First time i felt the will to live in Prashant. His smile spoke a thousand words, in a way telling me thank you for your help, I want to live now, I'l be alright in a few days.
Days passed by , his condition started improving. I made it a point to visit him everyday, even if i wasnt posted in ICU. One night i was strolling in the hospital corridor, i thought i would make a visit to ICU, i coudnt find him inside. As his condition was improving , they might have shifted him to the ward, So went to male ward coudnt find him there either. I thought wow, he has recovered very speedily, and even been discharged. I just happened to see the ICU nurse in the corridor, so i just enquired about prashant . What she said was a real shocker for me . Prashant died earlier night of cardiac arrest.
For a minute, i dint know what to do.. i never expected this. I was really shaken. I never knew that the 'Smile' meant Goodbye.....

How deep Is your Love !!!!

"How Deep Is Your Love"
Bee Gees - How Dee...

I know your eyes in the morning sun
I feel you touch me in the pouring rain
And the moment that you wander far from me
I wanna feel you in my arms again

And you come to me on a summer breeze
Keep me warm in your love
Then you softly leave
And it's me you need to show

How deep is your love?
How deep is your love?
I really meant to learn
Cos we're living in a world of fools
Breaking us down when they
All should let us be.

I believe in you
You know the door to my very soul
You're the light in my deepest, darkest hour
My savior when I fall

And you may not think I care for you
When you know down inside
That I really do

How deep is your love?
How deep is your love?
I really meant to learn
Cos we're living in a world of fools
Breaking us down when they
All should let us be.

Perhaps the most Beautiful Love song ever... I mean listen to the lyrics, Its just epitomizes those feelings when ure in Love....
Some say True Love , u experience only once in your lifetime....
Some say Love is blind....
Some say Everything is fair in Love and war....
Some say Dont Fall in Love, Rise in Love....

What crap. I say Stop falling in Love and get on with you life....
Nowadays All the Love is reduced to mere compromise. After all Love doesnt give everything in life, U need to be more compatible wid a person to live together....
There are people Who still believe in true Love n all... I dont, We live in a fast paced World, Its better to be practical than living in a Dream World!!
Better Love a person, Wid whom u r compatible.... And i bet u wont be disappointed in Life...
I might seem like a person whos just had a failure in a relationship, n out of frustration im writing all this, but this is the real world!!!
Its common Human tendency, we fear to face the practical truths of life... Theres always Hope that things will work out. In bad times, we fill things will get better... But whether it gets better or worse, no one can tell. Rather than waiting and hoping for things to happen, U just have to to suck it up at that moment and move on in life...

K i started out wid a Beautiful Song , and ended up like a sadist column...
So just enjoy he song , Enjoy those special moments to the fullest... or else Like Shahrukh Khan says, " Kya Pata Kal Ho naa Ho !!! "

60 Years of Independence !! How We've Fared !!

Today is 15th August. We celebrate 60 years of freedom since 1947.
Its a great feeling that we have come a long way in these 60 years.
The things that have improved is our Economy which is on a rise. India's GDP grew by 9.4% in 2006-07 as compared to 9.0% in 2005-06 , the per capita income growth rate is estimated to be around 8.4% for 2006-07, Literacy rate though not much has still increased, Employment rate is increased. Many Multinational Companies see India as a potential place for their Growth and i wont disagree. The roads have improved, Telecommunication network has improved..
The youth are slowly starting to realise their responsibility to the nation, At least i do , wanna make a difference for my country, and Politics is the place to be. As someone has rightly said, ' To Change the System, you have to be in the System'.
The problems to tackle are India's exploding population, which is about 1.12 billion as of now, with more population, u need more infrastructure. One thing is still very much prevalent is Poverty, feel bad when i see young kids begging at signals n road junctions, They must be studying in some school. But thats the way it is now in India, The Rich get richer and the Poor get poorer. Where there is all the latest amenities and gadgets in the big cities, People in the rural area get to enjoy only about 3-4 hrs of electricity n water supply everyday. Medical facilities are in a boom in the big cities, and in scarcity in rural areas. The Rural development scheme by the government is not very much functional.
As the Economy is growing so is Corruption, Everyone wants to be rich. Corruption has to be dealt strictly, only then there would be some multifaceted progress of the country...
India's Test victory against India, and release of Indian women's Hockey based movie 'Chak De India' ,couldn't have come at a better time, on the eve of 60 years of Independence.
Whatever may be the condition of my country, but i love my country, and i would strive for betterment of my country..

A Passionate night

It was raining that day.. I was looking from my window , was waiting for her. She had called me up n said she'l come in bout an hour. It was raining very heavily that day , So was worried if she'l be able reach safely as she was very new to the city.
Just then i heard an Autorichshaw coming inside my building compound and there she was, as beautiful as ever, She was wearing a blue dress, wid an umbrella in hand n struggling to take sum money from her purse to give it to the driver. While doing so her umbrella started sliding down from her shoulders, n fell down. Now she was totally wet. With all despair n anguish, she entered my wing, cursing the rain, as if her whole life was destroyed by those few rain drops which fell on her. Well i was enjoying every bit of the ordeal.
She rang the bell n came in. I cud see the happiness in her face seeing me after a long time. ya i was happy to see her too.. I introduced her to my parents , my bros and we started chatting. We talked n talked n talked bout all those old days, those wonderful experiences we had together. As we started talking, i dint realise it was quite late and it was dinner time. We had our dinner which by the way was very delicious as usual. My mom cooks sum awesome food.
k now it was time to to leave. As it was late in the nite, i had to accompany her till the bus stop. we said bye to my parents. we started off. was gonna drop her in a local bus, so we had to walk a certain distance to reach the bus stop. It was really nice weather windy , cool, and absolutely romantic. As we started walking, she started blabbering as usual. i looked at her. Man o' man she was looking so pretty, her beautiful eyes , her wavy, silky hair moved wid the wind as if they were singing wid the wind, her smile seemed worth more than a million dollars that day. I dont know what was happening to me that day. I never looked at her in that manner, she was a friend. I kept reminding my self the same thing again n again... as there were weird thoughts coming onto my mind, wanted to hold her near me and kiss her passionately.
In the mean time, it started raining very heavily, i had forgot my umbrella, n incidentally her umbrella refused to open. damn!!! we both were getting wet, i saw a small shed at the side of the road. we had to run quite a distance to reach there. Strangely there was not a single vehicle on that road , not even an autorickshaw, as if sumtin was meant to happen.
i handed her my Handkerchief, to wipe her face as we both were completely wet. Damn she looked more beautiful n sexy in her wet clothes, I cud see drops of water running down her cheeks, her lips. I coudnt resist myself. I decided i'l make a move. i held her wid both my hands strongly, looked in her eyes, we were both staring at each other passionately, well dont know bout her, but atleast i was. I moved closer to her. I could literally hear her heartbeats getting faster, and mine was too. I moved more closer. i dint know whether i was doing the right thing or not. I just knew that i have to kiss her.
I had seen in the movie Hitch, in which Will Smith says, " The secret to a good kiss is to go 90% towards the gal and wait for the gal to move other 10 % towards you and wait as long as it takes". I thought the time has come to implement these tips in real life.
As i stood close to her, i bent down towards her , well yeah 90% towards her n waiting for a while, and guess what she also started moving towards me. Wow i thought ive hit a jackpot today. As we our lips came closer n closer , just before the kiss , i heard a very loud noise and it was really painful to my ears. It was my morning 'ALARM'.
"Damn it!!! it was a dream." I screamed in disgust and went to sleep again....

MORAL OF THE STORY : Never go 90... go direct 100 :)

An Alternative to Stem Cells for Treating Chronic Brain diseases!

With ethical issues concerning use of discarded embryos and technical problems hindering development of stem cell therapies, scientists in Korea are reporting the first successful use of a drug-like molecule to transform human muscle cells into nerve cells. This advance could lead to new treatments for stroke, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and other neurological disorders.

In the study, Injae Shin and colleagues point out that stem cell research shows promise for repairing or replacing damaged nerve cells to treat such diseases. However, many barriers hinder efforts to move those therapies from lab to clinic. The use of "small molecules" -- compounds that include most drugs -- to generate new nerve cells from easily available cells or tissues would provide a more convenient and attractive approach to stem cell therapies, the new study notes.

The researchers exposed immature mouse muscle cells (myoblasts) growing in laboratory cell cultures to neurodazine, a synthetic small molecule. After one week, 40-50 percent of the myoblasts were transformed into cells that resembled both the structure and function of nerve cells, including expression of neuron-specific proteins. Additional studies showed a similar transformation in a group of human skeletal muscle cells that were exposed to the same chemical for several days, they add.

"In conclusion, we have developed the first small molecule that can induce neurogenesis of non-pluripotent myoblasts and the cells derived from mature, human skeletal muscle," the report states. "These studies build upon recent research illustrating the value of chemical approaches for providing tools that differentiate lineage-committed cells into other cell types."

Advances in Telomere Therapy Outstrip Stem Cell Therapy Without Raising Ethical Concerns

The debate over stem cell research and its ethical and moral implications continues to rage on even though there seems to be an alternative to stem cell therapy that is decidedly better.
Among politicians in Washington an effort is being made to block scientists from using embryonic stem cells in research, which is where the future of stem cell therapy seems to be headed, despite the promises such research holds for curing cancer and other serious diseases. Because embryos from which stem cells are cultivated necessarily die, research in this direction has come under fire as unnecessarily killing potential lives.
Regardless of the ethics and morality behind embryonic stem cell research, both sides of the debate have ignored emerging technologies that are likely to make embryonic stem cell research a mute point. Nanotechnologies involving chromosomal telomeres, such as those acquired and developed by Rancho Cordova, California-based Telomolecular, can achieve everything that stem cell therapies achieve but without many of the drawbacks.
Telomeres are protein compounds that act like caps on the ends of chromosomes and make sure that the DNA replication process ends the way it’s supposed to when a cell divides. But every time a cell divides the telomeres shorten and eventually they become exhausted. Telomere exhaustion has been linked with numerous age-related diseases and with cancer. Stem cell therapy attempts to address this problem by growing new tissue with renewed telomeres in place of the tissue with exhausted telomeres. But stem cell therapy can lead to development of cancerous or abnormal tissues.
Telomere therapy, combined with Notch 1 therapy (used in treating regeneration abnormalities in non-dividing cells), regenerates exhausted tissues comprehensively and does not just grow new tissue in the presence of old tissue. This results in a significantly lower chance of growing cancerous and abnormal cells. Additionally, telomere therapy can be administered via non-invasive drugs to treat disease in targeted locations, which is not true of stem cell therapies.
“By combining telomere therapy with Notch 1 therapy we can accomplish everything that stem cell therapy can,” said Telomolecular chief executive officer Matthew A. Sarad. “Plus these technologies can be administered in sensible, non-invasive ways.”
Telomolecular is using its proprietary technologies in research that shows strong promise of treating and preventing cancer, reversing age-related diseases, and regenerating bone and other tissues. The treatments being developed by Telomolecular do not involve the cultivation of stem cells, therefore ethical and moral considerations linked to embryonic stem cell research do not apply to the research being done by Telomolecular and other biotechnology firms investigating telomere therapies.
Without a doubt, the promise of combating cancer and other diseases with telomere therapy outweighs the moderate success of stem cell therapies. It’s time that scientists and politicians turn their attention to this developing technology and forget the ethics-challenged hope of embryonic stem cell research.
