N - Powered India

06/09/2008
This Day is a historic day for India, with regards to foreign policy initiatives in Indian Political history which have been successful. The Nuclear Suppliers' group (NSG) agreed to grant India a "clean waiver" from its existing rules, which forbid nuclear trade with a country which has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in Vienna.
The Whole nuclear deal saga, which our Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh said, 'Its a deal for which you can even sacrifice the Government' , sort of came to an end with the waiver from NSG. But then thers more to it. Still the issue, that if india conduct the nuclear tests, will the agreement will be terminated immediately, is still not clear..
But there are many positives out of this waiver
First of all recognition of India, as a emerging superpower among the other developed countries. That can be clearly seen by the desperate attempts made by US to get a waiver, by convincing other members of NSG. Besides the whole formation of NSG was because of India's nuclear test at Pokhran in 1974. The same NSG has bend thier rules to accomadate india into the mainstream nuclear countries, thereby giving a green signal for nuclear trade itself is more than a historic day for India in World Economy..
What this deal means India can carry out nuclear trade, which will help big time replinishing our fuel resources. It wil also allow access to sensitive hi-tech nuclear power which serves industry and help some sectors like Pharma, Defence, Manufacturing, IT, Space etc. There will be more easier access to Nuclear technology.
With this nuclear deal and NSG waiver, Its not only improved ties with the US, but also with other major powers like Germany, France, UK, Russia, Japan. At the same time, ties with China may have taken a backstep. The unexpected objections taken by China against the waiver in the NSG meeting could be indicative of some cold relationships with the neighbours.
Nevertheless, even with its pitfalls, the 123 Indo-US nuclear deal and NSG waiver came as a welcome deal for India. And i would say its a win win situation for India atleast as of now.
Our Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has envisaged himself as a able leader of the country through the trust vote in the parliament and Nuclear deal.
Now hopefully the US congress also approves the 123 pact and the deal is expected to be signed at the end of this month. India wil also sign similar pacts with other Nuclear Suppliers.
